Why I'm Running

Dear Fellow Californian,

California faces financial challenges that can only be solved through innovation, experience and commitment. I'm running for Treasurer to make sure our state works for everyone.

Many parts of our great state still lag behind in economic recovery, the gap between the wealthiest and poorest Californians continues to grow, and the growth in our cities must be effectively managed to ensure shared prosperity.  The Treasurer plays a key role: investing California's money in a socially responsible manner and ensuring our state is on sound financial footing.

As a Certified Public Accountant, Chair of the Board of Equalization and former state and local official, I've put my skills to work for Californians. I'll be ready on Day One to serve as California's Treasurer and invest in the people and small businesses that are the foundation for California's economic success.

Please join our campaign today!

In Peace and Friendship,

Fiona Ma, CPA

Fiona Ma is a Certified Public Tax Accountant and currently serves as the Chair of the California State Board of Equalization. She was elected to the State Board of Equalization in 2014, and represents 9.5 million constituents.

As one of the two Certified Public Accountants (CPAs) to ever have served on the Board, Ma understands the challenges that businesses and taxpayers face today. That’s why, as Chair, she has worked tirelessly to uphold the highest level of integrity in government and fought to increase accessibility, accountability, and transparency over the Board and the taxpayer money it oversees.

Prior to serving on the State Board of Equalization, Ma served as a California State Assemblywoman from 2006 to 2012. She was the 112th woman to ever be elected to the State Legislature and the first Asian American woman to serve as Speaker pro Tempore of the California State Assembly.

In the Assembly, Ma authored groundbreaking legislation to ban toxic chemicals, known as phthalates, in baby products statewide. AB 1108 was the first law of its kind in the nation and became the model for the federal amendment on the same subject, authored by U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein in 2008.

As Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Domestic Violence, she worked on legislation to protect victims of domestic violence. Specifically, she authored AB 1593, which requires the Board of Parole Hearings (BPH) to give “great weight” to any information or evidence that the prisoner had, at the time of the crime, experienced intimate partner violence.

She also sponsored legislation to protect consumers, help California’s working families pay their bills, prevent the spread of Hepatitis B, increase access to quality healthcare, and provide equal rights for all Californians. She was a strong advocate for better neighborhoods, authoring laws to combat graffiti, recycling theft and disabled placard abuse.

Ma previously served one term as a San Francisco Supervisor. During her tenure on the Board of Supervisors, she authored the landmark Local Business Enterprise ordinance on behalf of women and minority business owners and passed legislation to tackle human trafficking.

Prior to pursuing a career in public service, Ma worked as an accountant for Ernst & Young, before leaving to start her own accounting practice. She is married to Jason Hodge, a full-time firefighter and an Oxnard Harbor Commissioner.

Ma received her B.S. from the Rochester Institute of Technology (NY), her M.S. in Taxation from Golden Gate University (SF), and an MBA from Pepperdine University. She has been licensed in California as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) since 1992. Ma is also a Member of CalCPA. She is currently on the Board of CA Women Lead, the Honorary Chair and Spokesperson of the San Francisco Hep B Free Campaign, a Screen Actors Guild (SAG) member and a CA Film Commissioner.
