February Newsletter

I was proud to stand with protesters at San Francisco International Airport following President Trump's discriminatory ban on Muslims entering the United States.

Fiona protesting

My own parents were refugees from China who came here for a better life. Our nation has always welcomed immigrants with open arms. We have always stood for liberty and justice.

We must continue to fight against Trump and his targeting of people based on religion. Please join me in signing the petition to Congress and the Senate and join protest events in your community.

Mentoring Our Youth

As part of National Mentoring Month, I joined the Mixed Roots Foundation (and founder Holly Choon Hyang Bachman) and its community partners, Korean American Family Services, Five Acres Foster Care & Adoptions, First Place for Youth, and Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters on January 15th at the Los Angeles Lakers 2nd Annual Mentoring Night.

Two of my favorite mentors are leaders in youth mentoring and foster care -- my former boss Sen. John Burton (retired) and Congresswoman Karen Bass (and Former Assembly Speaker while I served in the State Assembly).

It's an honor to have Congresswoman Bass' endorsement in my campaign for State Treasurer. I hope you will join my growing list of supporters.

Keeping Jobs in California

Amazon biosphere

In January I traveled to Amazon headquarters in Seattle, Washington to meet with company executives. Amazon's presence in California is larger than in any other state. Amazon is opening two new distribution sites in California. I'm working with them to keep jobs in California as Amazon expands. Also, I was impressed with Amazon's commitment to a healthy diet, providing their employees more than one million free bananas so far!

Visiting the LA Chamber

LA Chamber

I had a great visit at the Los Angeles Area Chamber, where I spoke about the state of non-profits in California. Non-profits provide so many valuable services. We must work to keep these organizations strong and vital.

Keeping California Green

Nancy swearing in

I had the privilege of swearing in Nancy Bui-Thompson to her third term on the Sacramento Municipal Utility District Board. In 2016, SMUD was the top rated utility in the JD Powers survey and SMUD's prices for its customers were among the lowest in the state.

As Nancy was talking about SMUD's website for some things to consider before buying an electric car, I was reminded of my legislation that removed barriers, making it easier to install charging stations throughout California.

Celebrating Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year

Last year, Assemblymembers David Chiu, Phil Ting and I hosted our first annual Chinese New Year's community celebration in our San Francisco State Building. This year, newly elected Senator Scott Wiener joined our festivities. Wishing everyone a happy, healthy, prosperous and peaceful Year of the Rooster!

Love is in the air

February 14 is Valentine's Day, a time to celebrate love and relationships.

I am proud to have been among the first to perform marriages at San Francisco City Hall in 2004, when Mayor Newsom declared that San Francisco issue marriage licenses to same sex couples.

Now more, than ever, we need to stand up for equality!

Let's Stay in Touch

As I continue to travel across California, I'd like to hear from you. Please let me know about upcoming events in your area!
